FREEDOM OF RELIGION OR BELIEF: THE LEARNING PATH (MALAWI)

In September 2022, the IPPFoRB brought a small group of parliamentarians from Indonesia, Malaysia, Ghana and Malawi for the IPPFoRB Academy in Oxford. During the intense 3 days of training, participants discussed the right to freedom of religion or belief and its intersection with other rights, such as the right to education and women’s rights. Towards the end of the training, MPs identified tools and strategies they could adopt in their work in the respective countries and drafted action plans.

This spring, IPPFoRB is convening a series of digital workshops that build on the outputs from the Academy in Oxford. In April 2023, IPPFoRB, in collaboration with African Parliamentarians Association for Human Rights (AfriPAHR) and African Centre for Parliamentary Affairs (ACEPA), will organise two workshops for a broader group of parliamentarians from Malawi.

In the first workshop, taking place on the 17th of April 2023, Dr. Mine Yildrim from the Freedom of Religion or Belief Initiative will facilitate a discussion about the freedom of religion or belief and the right to education.

The key takeaways from this session will be operationalised in a second workshop, hosted on the 19th of April 2023. Here, Mr. Trevor Penton from the Flourish Academy will guide us through the development of a plan for future steps. This workshop will provide the participants with useful tools for advancing the right to freedom of religion or belief in practice.

The aim of these workshops is to introduce the IPPFoRB competence-building activities to new MPs, share experiences about how successful (or not) the strategies devised in Oxford have been, discuss more in detail additional challenges MPs encountered in their work to advance freedom of religion or belief.

Participation in the workshop is by invitation only. For more information, please contact us at contact@ippforb.com
